How to Write a News Release:
What — A news release is a brief article that the media may run as is, or may choose to rewrite,
or adjust based on their news judgment. It can also serve as a reason for the media to follow up with you
for further information, quotes or interviews.
How — Click here for a sample news release about NFC Month. Use the
sample as a guide for writing your own release if you are writing about an event, activity or your
organization.
When — Send it out in a timely manner — November is not that far away. If the news release is only
about NFC Month, send it out again the last week of October as a reminder. If it is specific to an event
you are planning, send it out several weeks prior to your event and then again one week before your event.
Where — Develop a mailing list for the daily and weekly newspapers, television and radio in
your area. You can find this information on your city’s web site or in city media directories of
the yellow pages. Address all envelopes or emails to “Metro Editor” for the print media and
“Assignment Editors” for radio and television.
